SCAM BUSTERS

North Shore Collection Agency sent me a notice that I owe Publishers Clearing House Money. The fact is that I never ordered or received anything from Publishers Clearing House.

Over the next two months, I received phone calls from agents that work for North Shore Collection Agency stating to me that if I didn't pay Publishers Clearing House that they were going to come to my house and kill me. I am very upset and have notified the FBI and Homeland Security. I plan on suing North Shore Collection Agency and Publishers Clearing House.

No one has the right to threaten any persons life. They are going to pay!

They threatened to come to your house and kill you. That is so absurd I am sitting here laughing my - off.

So they threatened to kill you for what a $20-$30 bill that is not even reasonable to assume that happened. I understand if your upset an agency would call you or send you a letter about a debt you don't owe. First understand that they are a legit agency and they collect on accounts which their clients (I.E. publishers clearing house etc..) advise them are owed.

So if you have an issue with being billed for something you didn't receive then your true issue is with the client not Northshore. Under the FDCPA public law 109 (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) you have a few options which you can and should follow. First you have the right to dispute the debt which you can and should do by sending them a letter either by registered mail or even fax stating that you do not owe the bill - they are then required to either provide proof that you do or to drop the debt and remove it from your credit report.

The second thing you can do is to request they cease and desist all collection efforts. The second option should not be necessary if you dispute the debt - Whatever you do don't just ignore it or advise them to cease and desist without disputing as the account will remain on your credit report until you formally dispute said debt.

I just got the first notice for the exact same thing. Funny is that it is for my husband who has been deployed overseas almost a year!

I cannot get ahold of anyone at the company to inform them they are breaking the law, but to no avail. Thank you for posting this, if I get a phone call I will do exactly the same as you and inform the FBI, since I also work for the government.

I owe them NOTHING but they continue to harass!

My credit card number was compromised via the hacked server of an online seller where I had purchased items. Thousands of dollars in false debt were accumulated. However, I caught the fraudulent activity within the first 2 days and the credit card bank terminated the account and released me from any responsibility for the fraudulent purchases. One such purchase was for a $9.95 "Sheer Cover" make-up kit. Being male, this is totally not my thing. When the smoke settled, I began to get notices for collection of this petty sum. I wrote/explained the situation. It has now been nearly 2 years and I am still getting the PITA notices for this measly $10 which I never ordered, which I never wanted, which I am NOT liable for. I called NSA recently on the phone and explained again. I was placed on hold until I had to hang up. Today - I received another notice. These people are vermin. I pay ALL of my debts - ON TIME. NSA must be a garage outfit staffed by the dregs of society.

I have been receiving threatening letters from North Shore Agency demanding collection of $19.94 for a subscription to Men's Journal. I never subscribed or received this periodical. North Shore told me "they don't think that is the way a responsible party should act"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On that I agree - North Shore is not a responsible company and Men's Journal has been just as difficult to deal with in correcting this matter. I have called and written both parties with no resolution. I have an excellent credit rating and want to keep it that way. This has been absurd!!!!!!!!!!! Watch out for North Shore and Men's Journal.

North Shore Agency fake collection letter

Received letter form NSA in Valley View, OH for magazine subscription I never renewed. Thought it was fishy when I had received no bill from publishing company. It is impossible to reach anyone at telephone number, just various messages. Beware of these scammers! They offer lots of options for payment but no way to speak with anyone. You must send correspondence instead. I checked with the publishing company and they have no connection to this collection agency. They are fraudulent. Hope someone apprehends and prosecutes these lowlife scam artists. Moral of story? if it doesn't seem right, don't pay and investigate first.

Received a collection notice for a magazine subscription I never ordered!

I had a subscription for People Magazine and it ran out. I decided not to subscribe again. I received many collection notices from North Shore Agency that I owed $116.07 for a subscription that I never ordered. When you call their number you can only pay the bill...you cannot get a live person. I was smart enough not to pay this. This is a SCAM! Beware! IMy life is so busy that I questioned myself if I ever renewed the subscription for the magazine. When I finally found a few minutes to spare I checked out this Agency and they are definitely not legit!

This happened to my parents. They were signed up for a Hispanic language magazine.

My parents do not speak Spanish. They called the magazine itself and told them about the situation. The magazine was very familiar with the company and advised my parents it was indeed a scam. They warned them that they would receive a bill demanding payment sooner or later, that they had seen it happen to innocent victims, over and over again.

DO NOT pay them a dime.

If they pursue it, let them know you are well aware they are scam and then report them to any and every agency. Make them prove you ordered this magazine.

they are the *** I have even heard about people that have been a victim of id theft and have police reports, and this company ignores that. are they ligit- probably not. :(

Mail fraud

I received a bill for a magazine I never ordered or received. The automated phone lines were dead ends. The phrasing on the letter was intimidating, as if I would be prosecuted if I did not pay this past due amount. There were 3 separate addresses between the envelope, invoice and contact information. This is a scam to bully consumers into paying a small amount in order to not be harassed by a bogus collection agency. I submitted a mail fraud notification to the US post office and I contacted my state's attorney general's office. I will also contact the state's attorney general's office in the states on the envelope and invoice as well as the New York state's attorney general. It was a bad idea of them to target a teacher on winter break!

North Shore Agency Scam

I received a threatening letter from North Shore Agency saying I owe Verizon $118 for home phone service. Weird thing is I never have had service with Verizon and the letter did not even provide a phone/account number, I called Verizon and they stated they do not have a account for me and also they have not heard of this company. I hope someone seeks a Lawyer and sues this company for harassment and fraud. Count me in if anyone does decide to sue! They should not be allowed to harass people like this! I plan on investigating this further.

Yes, I received a letter from North Shore Agency claiming that I owe Sprint $171.00. What a scam!

I called Sprint and said I do not owe them any money.

Mind you, I did not call the number for Sprint provided by the NSA. I am going to report them to BBB!

Guest

If you are getting magazine subscription letters of collection from north shore agency in magazine psychology today, here is the number to get your issue resolved: 1-80*-***-****

North shore company

I closed my sprint internet account on July 9th, 2012. I paid the amount that I was told that I owed. I didn't received any bill from Sprint. My next statement is from this company for double that I suppose was my final payment. and they don't understand reason or they don't care either. Court is the next step I think if they don't want to be fair. I over paid for this sprint air card for two years because I had a contract and I couldn't cancel. I was ripoff by spring and now I am beign ripoff by this company.

North Shore Agency and Working Mother magazine

I received a collection letter from North Shore Agency stating that I owed Working Mother Magazine 12.00. So, I immediately contacted Working Mother Magazine via email and explained the situation.

First email back from the magazine said that she had contacted North Shore and told them to take my name off list and that my credit rating would not be affected. Then get second letter from someone else at Working Mother Magazine saying they could not find my account and I needed to provide that or my mailing address (in my original letter to them i told them I did not have an an account and did provide them with my address at the bottom of the letter) so I had to email her back that information. Then the next day get another email from the first lady stating again that she would contact North Shore Agency (this is the one that had already stated that she had contacted them) and that she also found out that they received one of those cards that falls out of magazines all the time with my name and address on it in December. So apparently someone had filled that out according to them, but what makes no sense to me is that I never received a magazine or bill before.

So how could they send me to collections? How can a magazine send you to collections anyway? Usually if someone does not pay for the magazine, they would not be sending them out, I think. Working Mother Magazine never denied that they were using North Shore Agency, nor would they tell me how someone can be sent to collections over a magazine.

Very fishy sounding to me.

North Shore Collection Agency

I recieved a collection by North Shore Collection Agency in the amount of $31.68. I have never heard of this company, and it seems to me as if this company scams people out of their hard-earned money. It is sickening for a company that supposedly is a company that helps people, but the only thing that helps themselves! This company did not name the item I "supposedly" ordered. Sounds to me as if they put random people on the list, and send them a random amount the the person owes. I did not order ANYTHING from this company.

Sent us a threatening letter

We keep receiving threatening letters from North Shore Agency saying we owe Oxmoore House, Inc. $16.90 for a magazine we NEVER purchased or received. They are saying they will continue to seek collection and forward our information to the collection agency if we do not send them a check. This is obviously a scam and people need to be aware. i am writing on back of the letter they sent to NEVER bother me again. I have read several reports that they are a fraudulent company and not to trust anything they send. The BBB actually rates the Oxmoore House, Inc an A+......Wouldn't trust anything they have to say again.

North Shore Agency FedEx scam

I received a fake FedEx bill with out an account number, looked real enough but I also received a collection notice from North Shore Agency with the same invoice number. I guess we know who sent the fake invoice, FedEx was not interested much but the US Postal service is.

Save the fake paper and take it to your post office. Mail fraud is big trouble for North Shore. Please do your part in stopping this type fraud by filing a compaint with USPS and saving some body else from getting taken advantage of.

If you do nothing it will continue and FedEX did not seam to care. I guess I will use UPS from now on.

NSA scam companies too. Everything looks legit on the "invoice" but...

FedEx never sends past due warning.

"Invoice" doesn't have purchase order number. Letter will be sent to US postal service and FedEx complaint department.

Guest

Thanks so much for posting this alert! I got one a delinquent notice in the mail today.

I don't use FedEx so it was easy to question.

I'll turn it into the post office today. Can't believe North Shore Agency has been doing this for at lease 7 years!

Guest

Thank you because I just got two and I’m like “fedex?!” I don’t have anything through fedex.

Guest

My company has received several of these things from North Shore, one with a fed ex bill one with another vendor.

Guest

My company received a letter today. However a big sign of scam was that they completely butchered my companies name.

Interesting to see that a year later..

North Shore is still scamming. :sigh

Guest

I received a collection letter today from North Shore. Seems I owe FedEx some money on my account.

Funny thing, I don't have an account with FedEx. I tried to reverse look up the phone number on the bill and cannot find any information on it.

Calling FedEx and the Post Office on Monday. :(

NORTH SHORE AGENCY - SCAM - Collection letter for magazine I never heard about or care about.

My daughter received a collection notice for a Magazine, from North Shore Agency. She did not solicit or request the magazine.

NSA sent HER a collection notice for $24.00. I have contacted the magazine - yet to hear back, so I filed a complaint with the AG's office and BBB. Want some good reading, search the BBB for this agency and take a gander. Go figure.

I didn't order the mag, my wife didn't order the mag and my daughter didn't order the mag, wonder if the collection agency did?, maybe they should send themselves a collection notice?!?!

Also makes you wonder just who is in on the scam? Maybe the AG's office can determine that.

I believe I ordered Girls World for my granddaughter, but she never received it. I was billed for 12 editions of the magazine, and before I knew it, I received a collection letter from the collection agency.. Infuriating

Guest

I received a bill from North Shore Agency for flower bulbs I ordered last Spring from Publishers Clearing House. I called Publishers Clearing House today and told them I was certain I had paid this bill.

They said yes I had a zero balance and they do not use a collection agency.

What bothers me is how did this scam company know I ordered the bulbs from Publishers Clearing House with the correct order number? Many people may just go ahead and pay it leading to more fraud.

Guest

I did not subscribe to nor have I ever received this rag magazine. go stuff your g.d. scam where the sun never shines

Guest

On the same day that I got bill for $79, a "sixth and final notice" and "If we do not receive payment within 60 days, the account will be turned over to an authorized third party for collection" from The Nation Magazine, I also got a letter from North Shore Collection Agency demanding payment of $79. North Shore Agency has "For your convenience, you may pay by ...credit card through our secure website...." SCAM

A North Shore Agency collection letter was received by an elderly friend who has not subscribed to nor received a Harper's magazine. It is getting to the point where no one should ever respond to door to door,e-mail,or U.S.

mail subscription offers. Perhaps then these sleez bags will find another method for fleecing the unsuspecting.

Guest

I am experiencing exactly the same scenario. This is clearly a scam.

But what's even more interesting, is that before I was contacted by North Shore Agency, I also received very unpleasant letters from "Harper's subscription department" hectoring me for not meeting my obligations, and is that how I was raised, etc? Completely ludicrous - could not possibly have been sent by Harper's, which is a decent magazine last time I checked.

Guest

I received a notice from North Shore about a year and a half ago. I have a friend who is a collection agent and told me they do not have a good reputation in the collection community.

I received notice because I took a free sample magazine from Harpers. After reading the sample issue I decided I didn't like it and didn't want to get a subscription. Because I didn't subscribe Harpers gave my name to North Shore saying I owed them money for the subscription and North Shore began sending me letters. I sent a note to Harpers to tell them I didn't subscribe to the magazine, I only took the free sample they offered.

I heard nothing from Harpers and kept getting notices from North Shore. I couldn't reach anyone at North Shore by phone, so I called the publisher of Harpers and complained.

They took care of it for me by contacting North Shore. Harpers did the right thing but I was surprised that such a well established and prestigious magazine would be so sleazy.

North Shore Agency reported to state's Attorney General and FTC

I was forced to report NSA to the FTC and Oklahoma's AG with formal written complaints because they called numerous times throughout the day while I was at work and was getting me in trouble at work. I have since turned over my business cell phone to the boss and they are still calling her asking for me. They even informed her of my debt and asked if she'd loan me the money or work me more so I could pay it. I know this definately IS against the law. So I immediately filed the complaints with both the state and the federal gov.

North Shore Agency is sending me collection letter on a magazine I have paid and not through them.

I have been getting collection notices from North Shore Agency for months for ALL YOU magazine saying "YOU KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG" "WE BELIEVE IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO, AND YOU KNOW IT". They say that I owe $26.88. I have a current paid subscription to ALL YOU magazine, so I contacted them about getting this notice. They show my account is paid in full and current, they don't know why I am getting the notice from NSA, they (all you) show no record of me not paying or that it was turned over to NSA. Called NSA and have written NSA and still getting the collection notice. I could understand if I actually owed this!

I called Motor Trend and requested they remove my name from NSA contact list. They promised to remove my name as my subscription was paid in full.

After two more NSA mailings, I promptly cancelled my subscription.

Too bad, as I liked the magazine but the hassle is not work $10/year magazine. I encourage all to cancel until the magazines get the message.

Guest

contact the magazine and tell them that you've already paid and that NSA still sends you demand letters. RS mag told them to stop sending me letters coz I paid directly to rolling stone not nsa.
